Approaching Maliit na Bahay, Mindanao, The Philippines

Their driver pointed at the road ahead, now bathed in darkness, the sun having set only minutes before, their headlights barely slicing a path.

“We should stop. It’s too dangerous.”

Hiroki shook his head, staring at the GPS. “No, we’re almost there.”

“But this place is crawling with MILF. We’re sitting ducks.”

“Keep driving. We’ll deal with—”

Lights suddenly turned on ahead and their driver slammed on the brakes. Silhouettes of men carrying what were likely AK-47s were highlighted by the high-beams of the vehicle blocking their path, and Hiroki cursed as he realized their driver had been right.

“Turn out the lights.”

“What?”

“Do what I say.”

The driver turned out the lights and Hiroki grabbed the bag at his feet filled with his gear, then gripped his door handle. “Everybody out and into the trees. Now!” He shoved his door open and sprinted for cover, hitting the ground as gunfire erupted. He rolled to a knee, taking up position behind a tree, then drew his pistol, emptying the mag into the front of the vehicle, killing the lights, the entire scene now shrouded in darkness.

He unzipped his bag and pulled out the night-vision goggles inside, fitting them over his head. He flipped down the goggles and assessed the situation as he reloaded. Their driver was dead behind the wheel, but no one else appeared to be in the vehicle.

His men had followed his orders without hesitation.

Like loyal Yakuza should.

“Open fire!” he ordered as he took aim, squeezing the trigger at the targets highlighted in his goggles. The enemy were scrambling for cover, but several were already down. He counted at least six still moving, and let the others keep them ducking while he picked them off when they came up to fire.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t a great shot.

Gunplay wasn’t very common in Japan, his expertise mostly acquired while playing Ghost Recon.

A thunderous entrant to the field of battle changed everything, a bright muzzle flash overwhelming his goggles, forcing him to look away, though not before spotting the source.

A mounted weapon in the rear of the vehicle, likely a .50 cal or equivalent.

He heard a cry to his left, one of his comrades going down, then another. He took aim and emptied his pistol toward the raging weapon, squeezing the trigger repeatedly until he was out, one of his last shots finding its mark.

The weapon fell silent.

He took the opportunity to advance through the trees as he reloaded. The remaining terrorists—for that’s whom he assumed they were—scrambled to re-man the silent weapon. A single position on his side still fired, and he realized there were only two of them left against what still appeared to be four.

Yet he didn’t fire, instead continuing to advance as silently as he could, his goggles giving him the best view of the battlefield of anyone on it.

And within moments, he was behind them.

He emerged from the trees, all four targets visible, hiding behind the vehicle as they fired toward his last surviving comrade.

He started from the left.
